Relay for Life Volunteers

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature activity, and is the single largest non-profit fundraising event in the world. Teams of people come together to raise money to save lives, help people affected by cancer and empower all to fight back against this disease.   Relays are an overnight event, up to 24-hours in length, with a team representative walking a track at all times.  If you are interested in volunteering, here is what you need to know:

  • A Relay For Life event is made up many teams from all parts of the community. You may volunteer to be a part of a team, or organize a team and become a Team Captain.
  • Each team commits to raising money to meet the Relay goal.
  • We do not accept court-ordered volunteers for this program.
  • All teams for each Relay event are organized under a Relay Committee. Volunteers are always needed for the following committees:
  • Team Recruitment - Re-enlist veteran teams, recruit new teams, and do presentations at team meetings.
  • Registration/Accounting - Help oversee the registration of participants and the tabulating of funds raised per individual/team. This committee requires several volunteers and is a great opportunity for bank tellers, accountants, cashiers, etc.
  • Food and Beverage - Secure donations of refreshments and beverages for the participants during the event.
  • Entertainment - Arrange entertainment for the event consisting of music, games, activities, etc.
  • Public Relations/Marketing - Coordinate year-round marketing and media coverage for the event, including television, radio, print, etc.
  • Advocacy and Mission Delivery - Recruit Relay volunteers to join in grassroots efforts to change laws and public policies that affect state and federal cancer programs.
  • Corporate Underwriting - Create sponsorship proposals and secure funding or underwriting donations from local companies and organizations.
  • Luminarias - Coordinate the luminaria ceremony, sell luminaria bags prior to and during the event, apply the inscriptions on the luminaria bags, and place them around the track and in the grandstands at the Relay.
  • Setup and Logistics - Oversee the Relay facility and assist with the setup and cleanup of the site before, during, and after the event. Obtain needed items for the Relay such as tables, chair, special event tents, restroom facilities, waste disposal, lighting, transportation of goods, etc.
  • Survivors - Recruit cancer survivors and caregivers to participate in the first lap of the Relay. Coordinate the survivor ceremony and reception/activities that may include a handprint wall, survivor eternal life chain, etc. Register the survivor participants and honor them with a special memento (buttons, ribbons, sashes, shirts, etc.)
